Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his 10th international tournament for Portugal with Nations League hat-trick against Switzerland

Cristiano Ronaldo turned on the style once again for Portugal as he netted a superb hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over Switzerland.

The 34-year-old sent his country through to the first ever Nations League final, where they will meet either England or the Netherlands, who play tonight live on talkSPORT, on Sunday.

He took his tally for Portugal to 88 goals in 157 games since making his debut in 2003, and is now second on the list of all-time international goal-scorers in history, behind Iran’s Ali Daei.

It was the 53rd time the Juventus star had left with the match ball for club and country and was also the 10th tournament he had scored at for his country since netting at Euro 2004.

talkSPORT.com takes a look at the other tournaments Ronaldo has netted in.

Euro 2004

Having broke through as an 18-year-old the year earlier with both Manchester United and Portugal, Ronaldo played at his first major tournament, scoring in the group stage loss to Greece and against Netherlands in the semi-final.

Ronaldo would also convert his spot-kick in the shoot-out win over England, but Portugal would lose in the final to unlikely winners Greece.

Euro 2008

Coming off the back of his 42-goal heroics for Man United and being named best player in the world, Ronaldo was expected to take that summer’s tournament by storm.

However, he and Portugal failed to get going, with Ronaldo netting just once in a 3-1 win over Czech Republic.

World Cup 2010

Following his first season with Real Madrid, Ronaldo led his country at his second World Cup, this one in South Africa, and was named man of the match against Ivory Coast, Brazil and North Korea, the latter of which he scored his only goal against in a comprehensive 7-0 win.

World Cup 2014

Despite suffering from patellar tendinitis in his knee, Ronaldo still managed to play through the pain and while clearly not at his best, he did score the winner against Ghana, his 50th international goal, making him the first Portuguese to play and score in three World Cups.

Ronaldo became the first player to score in four European Championships, when he converted twice against Hungary, before heading in against Wales in the semi-final. He was forced off injured after only 25 minutes of the final, but won his first tournament with Portugal, as they beat France 1-0 in stoppage-time.

Prior to his Nations League treble, Ronaldo scored a brilliant hat-trick in Portugal’s opening group stage match with Spain as the two sides shared a six-goal thriller.

He then scored the only goal in the following game against Morocco, but missed a penalty against Iran, the same side he scored his first ever World Cup goal against in 2006.

“I talked about it with Ferguson and he said ‘we only have two players who always play who are Roy Keane and David Beckham and the rest I rotate a lot. So you will be with Butt, Scholes and the other guys. You will be rotated but I want you in the team’.

“But I had a little bit of fear over my left knee and if they said ‘you are not fit enough and we can’t take you because of your knee’, I would have a stamp on my forehead saying that I was not suitable for football.

“With Rangers I thought I had a better chance going there, with a four-year contract, and I was going to play there for sure.”

The former Netherlands international went on to make 129 appearances for Rangers over four seasons and netted 40 times.

He won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup once and the Scottish Cup twice during his time at the Glasgow club.

“Crime levels in Baku are generally low,” it reads. “But muggings do occur from time to time after dark in the centre of town around the western bars and clubs and near dimly lit entrances of private apartments.

“Take sensible precautions: be vigilant, avoid carrying large sums of money and don’t walk alone at night.

“Try to arrange to be picked up or dropped off as close to your hotel or apartment entrance as possible by a private/company driver, or a known taxi firm.

Reds fans upbeat, City faithful rejoice

There is a saying in football - "it's the hope that kills you" - but it certainly did not apply to the 300 Liverpool fans packed into the Jubilee Ballroom at Four Points by Sheraton Singapore as they prayed for a miracle.
They left at the end of the night not with the Premier League title they desperately craved but with renewed optimism that their team have what it takes to get it done next season.
Alan Chng, 45, secretary of the official Liverpool Supporters Club in Singapore, said: "No doubt, we're disappointed, but we're also encouraged by the good results we've got this season. With a charismatic manager (Jurgen Klopp) at the helm and, with supportive owners and the fans behind the team, we'll move on from this."
Before kick-off, the Reds fans knew everything depended on Manchester City's result at Brighton. No wonder a few had one eye on the large LED screens broadcasting their game against Wolves, and another on their smartphones keeping tabs on City's match.
And, for 21 minutes last night, that unlikely scenario played out.
The ballroom erupted when Sadio Mane put Liverpool in front and an even more raucous celebration followed when news trickled in that Glenn Murray had given Brighton the lead. "Blow the whistle now ref!", bellowed a Liverpool fan at the back of the room.
Laughter almost immediately gave way to groans after Sergio Aguero's equaliser, followed soon after by Aymeric Laporte's header which put City 2-1 ahead.
Over at the Thunderbird Bistro along Robertson Walk, about 30 City fans went through a gamut of emotions themselves, particularly in the first half.
Equity sales senior vice-president Vincent Ang, 55, who has supported the Citizens since 1977, said: "The match was nerve-wracking but I was confident. It's a new order and City will dominate for many more years to come, we have an awesome team."

This was City's fourth league title in eight seasons and Manchester native Dave Reade, 37, said the tables have turned on their fierce rivals Manchester United. The tennis coach led most of the chants last night and added: "Once you start supporting a team, you don't stop. There's no changing teams."
It was a sentiment shared by the Merseyside faithful inside the ballroom as they belted out You'll Never Walk Alone in the closing stages of the match.
David King, 37, a fan for 25 years, said: "This season, we've beaten Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain in the Champions League, and we achieved a record points tally. A lot of this squad is still young too, so I believe we are going to get there (and win the Premier League) eventually."

Gareth Southgate underlines need for education after England players suffer racial abuse in Montenegro

Gareth Southgate has called for education in the fight against racism after the disgraceful abuse suffered by England’s players in Montenegro.

The Three Lions sealed an impressive 5-1 victory to take control of their Euro 2020 qualifying group, but the football became a mere side note after Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were subjected to monkey chants from the home supporters.

Rose and Hudson-Odoi were subjected to racist abuse in Montenegro

Raheem Sterling celebrated the fifth goal by pulling his ears as a sign of defiance to what he later called ‘racists’ on social media.

And speaking after the game, Southgate argued that society must get to the root of the issue instead of handing out ‘worthless’ sanctions.

“I don’t think I need to comment on what was said,” England boss Southgate said. “It was clear to everybody that there were comments made.

“Reflecting on sanctions, sanctions are only of any use if they lead to education.

“Sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people.

“My kids don’t think for one minute about where people are born, what language they speak, what colour they are.

Southgate underlined the need for education

2

Southgate underlined the need for education

“There’s an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. So, we have to make sure that the education is right for everybody.

“In our country, (it’s) the same. I’ve said this before, I’m not sitting here just criticising what’s happened tonight because in our country we have the same issue. We’re not free of it.

“You can sanction clubs (or countries), but frankly that’s not going to stop one or two people who are of a mindset from doing what they want to do.

“So, we have to make sure that we educate young people because we have a better chance with young people and then we’ve got to lead that as far and as wide as we possibly can.”

UEFA are set to investigate and their regulations state that if supporters engage in racist behaviour then ‘the member association or club responsible is punished with a minimum of a partial stadium closure’.

It was a sad end to an impressive night for England, who showed resolve and skill as they scored five goals or more in back-to-back matches for the first time since 1984.

Ross Barkley’s brace was complemented by goals from Michael Keane, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling as the Three Lions overcame the hosts’ early opener.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren gave fans a glimpse of their changing room celebrations last night – and it was certainly an eye-opener.

After Jurgen Klopp’s men wrote themselves into history at Anfield, Lovren took the chance to document the mood in the dressing room following the incredible match.

First he spoke to his 2.2million Instagram followers before joining two-goal hero Divock Origi for a chat and allowing an exasperated Joe Gomez a moment on camera.

Rhian Brewster was next up on the tour, bellowing down the lens.

And cheeky Lovren then treated his followers to one of his team-mates standing naked with his back to the phone before laughing about the incident with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

He then gave the camera a few of his dance moves and was briefly joined by James Milner.

Virgil van Dijk was next up to celebrate, branding Lovren the ‘best defender in the world’ – a throwback to the Croatian’s comments at last summer’s World Cup.

Injured star Roberto Firmino and left-back Alberto Moreno were last but by no means least to feature, screaming wildly in Portuguese and Spanish.
