‘Roy Keane would sort out the Manchester United dressing room’, treble-winning legend Andy Cole tells talkSPORT

Manchester United legend Andy Cole has told talkSPORT former captain Roy Keane would ‘sort out’ the current Red Devils dressing room.

The former striker has revealed his frustration with the team after a dreadful season, and says the players need to start ‘self-policing’ behind closed doors – just as Sir Alex Ferguson’s famous treble-winning team did.

A number of United players have been blasted for their poor attitude following the team’s end-of-season collapse.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Old Trafford a huge lift when he returned to the club as interim boss in December, but it has not gone as swimmingly since the Norwegian was appointed permanently in March.

United recorded ten wins and a draw from Solskjaer’s first 11 games in charge, but they have won just twice since he was given the full-time role.

And their forgettable season was capped off with a 2-0 defeat to relegated Cardiff City at Old Trafford on the final day of the Premier League season – leaving them in sixth place and a whole 32 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Cole joined talkSPORT on Tuesday to promote Man United’s upcoming ‘Treble Reunion’ match against Bayern Munich, which will see the former striker link up with the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham again.

And, asked by Jim White and Ian Holloway what he would say to the current team, the hitman said he would have ‘left it to the skip’ to sort things out.

Holloway: “You must have had a dressing room that almost ran itself with the characters you had in there.”

Cole: “I’d agree with that, 100 per cent. I was having this conversation the other day with Denis [Irwin] and Pally [Gary Pallister], and we were saying we very fortunate that we policed our own dressing room.

“The gaffer knew what we wanted from us and every now and again of course he would lose his temper with us, but he always believed in us to police our own dressing room and we did just that. That’s why we were such a good team.”

Holloway: “What would you do with some of the players in the dressing room at the minute? Surely you must get absolutely infuriated by some of their attitudes.”

Cole: “Yeah of course I get frustrated, I want Man United to do well. It’s my team and I’m disappointed with the position we’re in now.

“But if you’re asking what I would have done, I would have left it to the skip.

“The skip would no doubt sort out the dressing room, he certainly could.

“You’ve got to work your socks off, that’s a given no matter what level you play. All great teams have to work their socks off.”
