Football: Pogba strikes twice as Man United win on Solskjaer home debut

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's instant impact as Manchester United interim manager continued in his first home game in charge as two goals from Paul Pogba helped his team secure a 3-1 win over Huddersfield.
After a resounding 5-1 victory at Cardiff, in his first game since replacing Jose Mourinho at the weekend, Solskjaer saw his team make it six points in five days over the Christmas period.
More significantly, the win and performance also maintained the positive atmosphere generated by the arrival of the popular Norwegian, who spent nearly 15 years with the club as player and coach before moving to his current club Molde.
The first Old Trafford goal of the Solskjaer era came after 28 minutes after a Pogba free-kick had deflected off Philip Billing and behind for a corner.
Marcus Rashford swung over a cross which was met by Victor Lindelof with a goalbound flick that Christopher Schindler cleared off the line, only as far as Nemanja Matic, unmarked at the far post, who steered in his first goal of the season.
United had dominated possession to the point, without unduly troubling Jonas Lossl in the visitors' goal, and Solskjaer's animated reaction on the touchline during that period showed his passion for the task.
It was a point not lost on the United supporters who had given their new caretaker manager a heartfelt welcome on his return to the club where his playing career ended in 2007.

Solskjaer could not conceal the delight on his face as he strode down the touchline before kick-off, dressed in club blazer and tie, waving to supporters as he made his way to the dugout.
A banner proclaiming "20-Legend" - Solskjaer's shirt number in his United playing days - also made a return to the stands at Old Trafford, another reminder of the hero status the Norwegian holds at the club following his match-winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.

KEY TACTICAL SWITCH

But Solskjaer was not in for an easy afternoon. Huddersfield, who had moved bottom in the Premier League before kick-off, wasted a glorious chance after just 10 minutes, Terence Kongolo clearing the bar from six yards after a long throw-in by Billing.
And, when the visitors started the second half comfortably the more threatening of the two teams Solskjaer responded with an important double substitution that saw Ander Herrera and Ashley Young brought on.
Briefly, Huddersfield maintained their threat and a brilliantly-worked Alex Pritchard corner allowed Laurent Depoitre a 15-yard shot which David de Gea kept out with a magnificent, diving, one-handed stop.
That made the timing of Pogba's first goal all the more significant as he doubled United's lead just seconds later.
Rashford started the move with a darting 63rd minute run and pass to Juan Mata who reached the byline before pulling the ball back to Herrera whose square pass allowed Pogba to convert an accurate finish from 16 yards.
Pogba had only scored two Premier League goals in the same game on one other occasion - the derby victory at Manchester City in April that ranked as one of the highlights of Mourinho's time in charge.
But he would repeat the trick in Solskjaer's second game in charge, exchanging passes with Jesse Lingard after 77 minutes before beating Lossl with a spectacular right-foot finish from 25 yards.
Huddersfield at least claimed a late consolation as substitute Steve Mounie outjumped Pogba to head on an 88th minute Pritchard free-kick, setting up Mathias Jorgensen who slotted in from close range.

Manchester United suffer blow in tying down Ander Herrera and Juan Mata to new contracts

Manchester United are having trouble tying down Ander Herrera and Juan Mata to new deals.

Both players are out of contract this summer and could leave the club for free.

Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have been Manchester United team-mates for almost five years

Herrera and Mata had been sidelined with hamstring problems after being forced off in last month’s goalless draw with Liverpool, but they both made their injury returns against Wolves last weekend.

The Mirror report the pair’s agents are pushing for bumper wages for their clients, something United are not prepared to give them.

Herrera’s representatives are believed to be asking for a contract extension that would make the Spaniard one of the top earners at Old Trafford.

It has led to a standoff in talks as United’s stars have been demanding bigger salaries due to Alexis Sanchez’s £500,000-a-week wage.

Herrera, who has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, reportedly wants the club to double his £120,000-a-week wage, while Mata is hopeful of an increase on his £140,000-a-week pay packet.

Herrera has played a significant part in United’s revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Mata also playing well when called upon.

The duo have been at the club since 2014, playing a combined total of 400 games.

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield Town have condemned the racist abuse of midfielder Philip Billing, with the English Premier League strugglers saying they have reported the incident to the police.
The 22-year-old received online racial abuse late on Tuesday (March 12) from someone claiming to be one of the Yorkshire club's fans.
"We're aware of the racist message sent to Philip Billing over social media on Tuesday evening and have subsequently referred the case to West Yorkshire Police," said a Huddersfield statement issued on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield Town does not tolerate abuse of any kind and has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of discrimination.
"We will give our full cooperation to the police to deal with this matter in the strongest possible way."
Denmark Under-21 international Billing responded by retweeting the message from the fan with a thumbs down emoji.
The midfielder has been one of the Terriers' better players this season but went off at half-time during last Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth, amid speculation linking him with a move to another Premier League club at the end of the season.
The midfielder has produced several outstanding displays for the Terriers this season.
Town manager Jan Siewert said after the match he was unsure whether Billing was carrying an injury or not.
Saturday's loss saw bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield slump to a 15th defeat in 17 league games and they are 16 points from safety with eight matches remaining.

A penalty from Mohamed Salah and a late Divock Origi strike sealed a historic victory for the Reds and gave Klopp his first trophy with the Anfield club.

The victory also bears significant consequences for English football too, as the Merseyside outfit now have equalled their bitter rivals Man United’s trophy haul.

Both clubs have now racked up 42 major honours, with the Old Trafford club winning two more league titles than Liverpool but with three Champions League titles less than the Reds.

*Major honours counted as season-long competitions (Charity/Community Shield and UEFA Sup Cup not included), and no one-off competitions tallied towards total. European trophies include: European Cup/Champions League, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup/Europa League and Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Only top flight league titles are counted as major honours.

Meanwhile, Klopp couldn’t bottle up his emotions in the aftermath of his side’s victory, claiming it may well be the best night of his life.

The German also hit back at his side’s critics and sang a version of Salt-N-Pepa’s classic song Let’s Talk About Sex.

“There are always a couple of people who can tell you ‘yeah but they didn’t win’”, he said in an interview with Norwegian TV channel Via Sport.

“So now, let’s talk about six baby. Let’s talk about you and me. Let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be. Let’s talk about six.”

Bournemouth full-back Charlie Daniels has been ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery and is also expected to miss the start to the next campaign.

Daniels is set to miss the start of next season with a knee injury

Bournemouth confirmed the full-back had ‘subluxed his patella and required surgery to stabilise the patella’ and was set ‘for an extended spell on the sidelines’.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe said on the club website: “Charlie has picked up a really bad looking injury regarding his kneecap.

“He has had an operation and will be out for some time.”

Daniels has made 24 appearances for Bournemouth this season, scoring in the 4-0 home Premier League win against Chelsea at the end of January.

The full-back, who spent four years with Spurs from 2005 until 2009, moved to the south coast outfit from Leyton Orient in 2012 and has made 246 league appearances in total for the Cherries.

Howe’s side are next in action at Brighton on Saturday in the Premier League.

Callum Hudson-Odoi transfer latest: Manchester United join Liverpool and Bayern Munich in race for Chelsea winger

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is wanted by Manchester United, according to reports.

United are the latest team to enter the race for the 18-year-old forward, with their Premier League rivals Liverpool also keen on Hudson-Odoi.

Hudson-Odoi has impressed when given chances by Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri

There is also Bundesliga interest in the teenager, with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund previously expressing interest in him.

Hudson-Odoi has made just 18 appearances for Chelsea this season, but he debuted for England’s senior team during Friday night’s defeat of the Czech Republic.

Big things are expected of Hudson-Odoi, but his contract expires at the end of next season and the youngster has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Bayern are set to return with another bid for Hudson-Odoi this summer having failed to sign him throughout January, but the Mail claim Manchester United will also enter the running for him.

Liverpool were also claimed to be targeting Hudson-Odoi during the winter window, and their interest was once again reported earlier this week.

Maurizio Sarri, the Chelsea manager, has been criticised for refusing to utilise Hudson-Odoi more frequently.

However, he insists the teenager is a fantastic talent who needs to be developed in the correct manner rather than being thrown in at the deep end.

“I think to have pressure when you are 18 is very dangerous for a player,” Sarri said earlier this month.

“You can lose the target. When you’re 18 the target is to improve – to improve, tactically, mentally and physically.

Derby County EXCLUSIVE: Mel Morris insists he is ‘committed’ to the club and responds to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea links

Mel Morris expects Frank Lampard to still be Derby County manager next season

Derby will spend the summer preparing for another season in the Championship after losing the play-off final to Aston Villa on Monday.

Lampard had a remarkable chance to get the Rams back to the top flight in his very first season in management, but fell at the last hurdle with a 2-1 defeat at Wembley Stadium.

Derby’s build-up to the game was plagued with speculation over their head coach’s future, with claims he is being eyed up to take over from Maurizio Sarri as boss of former club Chelsea.

Morris’ future in charge of the club has also come into question, with reports this season claiming he wants to cut costs with the view to sell, having branded the Championship a ‘financial disaster’.

But, even though he admitted second tier clubs are losing over £500million across the board every season, Morris has insisted he remains fully committed to Derby.

Asked about his future, the Rams chief exclusively told talkSPORT host Jim White: “I’ve always been committed and that will continue.”

And quizzed about Lampard’s future, Morris continued: “There has been no conversation.

“Frank Lampard, every time anything moves on the management side at Chelsea his name is always going to be mentioned by their fans. That’s always going to happen.

“Right now we want to keep him.

“We’ve got two years left on his contract and would obviously love to retain Frank’s services, and I’ve had no indication that’s not going to be the case.”

New Singapore football head coach Tatsuma Yoshida led the Lions to a 4-3 victory over a Solomon Islands team ranked 21 places higher than them in his first game in charge last Saturday, but the result was not wildly celebrated by all.
Online, some local fans criticised the team's stray passing, errors that led to the Solomon Islands' goals, as well as the margin of victory over a team they perceived lacked quality, despite the higher world ranking (139 to Singapore's 160).
Yoshida, however, was unperturbed when The Straits Times asked him yesterday if he was surprised by such reactions.
"No," said the Japanese coach, who took charge of the Lions on May 30. "Fans, always, when there's a goal (cheer), and when you concede (jeer).
"All over the world, that's football. In Myanmar, Spain, Brazil, Japan, it's the same.
"No worry. We trust ourselves, no problem."
He added: "Three goals? It's okay. If (we conceded) 10, it's a problem.

NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN

TATSUMA YOSHIDA, Singapore national football coach, brushing off detractors' comments on the team's narrow 4-3 win over the Solomon Islands in his first game at the helm.

"Solomon Islands played well, and both teams wanted to win. So we try to improve together."
Despite calling the win over the Solomon Islands a good result and positive start, the former J-League coach rated his players' performance a "six or seven" out of 10, and said he hoped for further improvement against Myanmar in tonight's friendly.
"It has been good, but we need more training (sessions), and we need more time," said Yoshida, who turned 45 last Sunday.
Midfielder Zulfahmi Arifin, 27, deployed in a new left-sided defensive role by Yoshida, said it was "exciting" for the players to try to make a transition to a new style of play.
"It's not easy but I think we are adapting quite well," he said. "In the last game, we feel we have improved in our confidence in keeping the ball, interchanging positions... so I think it's good progress and a positive sign."
A win over Myanmar - ranked 140th - would improve Singapore's ranking for the draw of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers next month.
Despite being ranked well above the Lions, Myanmar have not had much joy over the past year.
In that time, they have played nine matches, losing five and winning just twice - against regional minnows Cambodia and Laos in the AFF Suzuki Cup last November - and have failed to score in over 360 minutes of play.
But in Thailand-based forwards Kyaw Ko Ko and Aung Thu, they have players who can hurt Singapore.
Coach Miodrag Radulovic, taking charge of his first game since his appointed in April, noted Singapore's good results this year - including a 1-0 win over Malaysia and a 1-1 draw with 90th-ranked Oman in regulation time before losing on penalties - and said the rankings are "sometimes not reality".
"I know Singapore very well because in November 2017, when I was in charge of the Lebanon national team, we played a friendly (which Lebanon won 1-0)," said the 51-year-old Montenegrin.
"I like to play with possession and attacking football, but philosophy is one thing, and game strategy is another, and we can't play the same against every opponent.
"We know how (Singapore) play, we know they are dangerous, but we will try to create chances and score goals."

This is a life-long process and is vital as it relates to self-trust. One of the main reasons we don't trust ourselves is that we haven't forgiven ourselves for mistakes we've made, pain we've caused, or regrets we have. These "demons" from our past haunt us and we use them as evidence to not go for things and not trust ourselves.

In Ourselves and Each Other We Trust - Robin Morgan

People usually have to earn our trust before we trust them. As nice as it would be to think like he does, if most people thought that way, we would probably see a lot of wallets lying around in public places, people would not spend so much on security devices and locks for their homes and cars, and children would be allowed to roam unsupervised

We all have, or have had, people in our lives we think we know. People that we trust, that we put our faith in. People we've invested time and emotion into, who make us feel safe and comforted and cared for. These people are our lifelines and connections in a vast world of disinterest.

Trust is not only between two people, but it's also within ourselves. Trust is when you know you can rely on yourself, have confidence in yourself and we feel safe physically and emotionally with

Oh how much easier, simpler, sleepier, to trust in gods and in strongmen! It's worth noticing that the concept of unity as triumphant while affirming liberty and diversity is the concept under attack today. E pluribus unum means, actually, in ourselves and each other we trust. That, it turns out, may be the greatest challenge of all.

We look for answers everywhere but within ourselves, for this is what we know how to do, this is what we were taught, this is what we were raised to believe. We spend most of our time looking outside ourselves for all the answers to our questions, not understanding that we already possess within ourselves all that we need.
