Football: Sir Alex Ferguson delivers rousing call to arms to Man Utd players

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United's legendary former manager Alex Ferguson has delivered a rousing call to arms to the players, insisting they could make the club successful again, a source close to the Premier League team told The Sun.
The 77-year-old Scot - who guided United to numerous trophies including two Champions League titles during his 27-year reign - has played an increasingly prominent role since former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became interim manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
The latest intervention from Ferguson, who has made a remarkable recovery from the brain haemorrhage he suffered last May, came at the behest of Solskjaer and took place at the training ground.
The squad are presently in Dubai for a training camp ahead of Sunday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur which represents a real test for Solskjaer to maintain his perfect record of five wins in five matches.
"He (Ferguson) told the lads that this group will make United dominant and successful again," the source told The Sun.
"He said that he believes in them and he wants them to enjoy themselves and to fight hard for each other and leave everything on the pitch."
Ferguson told the players that in Solskjaer - who has put a smile back on the players faces since the departure of the volatile Mourinho - they could look forward to happier times.

Solskjaer and Ferguson know each other well as the Norwegian played under him for 11 years, accruing many trophies including six Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League trophy.
"He also told them that the club is in good hands and he promised them that it will become bigger and better in the years to come and they will be part of this success," the source said.
"The players believe that there are some good times ahead."
Although Solskjaer has been appointed as a stop gap till the end of the season - Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino remains the bookmakers favourite for the full-time post - the players are keen according to the Daily Mirror he gets the job.
Solskjaer could do himself no end of good in pursuit of the job by landing a trophy this term with United still involved in the Champions League and the FA Cup, although they were drawn away to Premier League rivals Arsenal in Monday's fourth round draw.
"The players want to repay Sir Alex for his support and kind words and are determined to win something for him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season," the source said.

Arsenal news: Arsene Wenger says his health suffered in final years as manager

Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed his health suffered in his final years with the club.

The Gunners ended the 2017/18 season trophyless as the 69-year-old left after 22 years in charge last summer.

Wenger’s job came under scrutiny from Arsenal fans and he admits the pressure affected him ‘health-wise’.

The Frenchman said: “In life there are some splits that you choose and some that are imposed on you.

“In this case it was a bit of a mix of the two, because at a certain point, the fans need a change. In my last year it was becoming difficult.

“So it was both a break-up but also a relief for me, because carrying that responsibility for so long, with all the obligations that come with it, it wears you out.

“It’s extraordinarily difficult. And last year I felt I was beginning to pay the price health-wise.”

Wenger won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups during his time with Arsenal.

Cesc Fabregas, who Wenger signed from Barcelona in 2003, was upset by fan abuse his former manager received in the latter years of his Arsenal tenure.

He told BeIN Sports: “Some moments I was sad. He doesn’t deserve it for what he’s done.

“In football, it’s all about today. What you’ve done yesterday, unfortunately, doesn’t count.”

Wenger has been out of work since leaving Arsenal almost a year ago, and is unsure over a managerial return date.

In February, he said: “My future is unknown – even for me.

“I enjoy daily life now and I have been travelling a lot recently all over the world.

“I am enjoying a little bit less pressure, and more freedom as well. But I miss the competition.”

Arsenal 1-1 Brighton & Hove Albion: Gunners’ top four hopes all-but over with disappointing draw

Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the top four suffered a crippling blow after only managing a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton.

Tottenham’s loss on Saturday and Manchester United’s draw at Huddersfield on Sunday gave Unai Emery’s men the perfect chance to move within a point of fourth spot.

Instead they head into the the final day three points adrift and with an inferior goal difference to their north London rivals after Brighton toasted their survival with a deserved point.

Everything looked to be going Arsenal’s way when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a disputable eighth-minute penalty – Nacho Monreal going down under seemingly minimal contact.

But Emery’s side, who beat Valencia 3-1 here on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie, could not maintain their fast start.

Brighton, whose top-flight safety was confirmed when Cardiff lost at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, showed more attacking will than in recent weeks and earned a share of the spoils as Glenn Murray also converted from the spot after Granit Xhaka fouled Solly March.

Unlike their shaky start against Valencia, Arsenal were straight out of the blocks and Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit the inside of Mat Ryan’s right-hand post with less than two minutes gone.

They hit the front shortly afterwards with a contentious penalty, referee Anthony Taylor pointing to the spot after he adjudged Alireza Jahanbakhsh to have tripped Monreal.

Aubameyang made no mistake, sending Ryan the wrong way to move onto 20 Premier League goals for the campaign.

It looked set to be a stress-free afternoon for Arsenal when Auybameyang scored

True to form for much of the season, Arsenal nearly shot themselves in the foot with a comedy of defensive errors.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno passed the ball straight to March on the edge of his box and came tearing out to close down as his defence failed to clear on a number of occasions.

The German goalkeeper made amends by keeping out Murray’s header, with March hitting the side-netting moments later.

Ryan had to be at his best to get down low and push out a Shkodran Mustafi diving header from Xhaka’s corner and then turn an Aubameyang strike behind, Mkhitaryan also stinging the Australian’s palms before the interval.

It was Brighton who saw most of the ball at the start of the second half, March testing Leno at his near-post as the visitors went in search of an equaliser.

It came with 61 minutes on the clock, Taylor awarding the Seagulls a penalty after deeming Xhaka had felled March.

Murray tucked away the resulting spot-kick to level up the game with Brighton then sitting deep and frustrating their hosts.

Murray’s penalty ensured both sides share the spoils

Aubameyang fired a volley wide when he should have re-established the lead as Emery made a triple substitution with Alex Iwobi, Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac all introduced for the final 15 minutes.

But it was March who came close to winning it for Brighton, forcing a fine stop from Leno as Pascal Gross could only thrash the rebound wildly off-target.

The performance from the home side saw plenty of their fans head for an early exit, with many of those who remained jeering at full-time despite the post-match lap of honour and farewells for the retiring Petr Cech and Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey.

Football: Iwobi, Lacazette lead Arsenal to win at Huddersfield

HUDDERSFIELD, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Feb 9), but remain the only side without an away clean sheet in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal had suffered four defeats in their last nine league games, including a 3-1 loss at Manchester City last week, but Alex Iwobi put them ahead in the 16th minute with a deflected shot.
Huddersfield pressed and harried but rarely troubled the Arsenal goal in the first half, with the difference in quality showing as the visitors doubled their advantage through Alexandre Lacazette's 10th league goal of the season a minute before halftime.
Adama Diakhaby had two good chances to get Huddersfield - who had drawn once and lost 11 of their previous 12 league games - back into the match, but failed to really test Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.
Sead Kolasinac put through his own net in stoppage time to give Huddersfield late hope, scoring Huddersfield's first goal in over nine hours of football in all competitions, but the visitors held on for the win.
Victory moved Arsenal level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, who play Manchester City on Sunday, while Huddersfield stayed bottom, 13 points from safety.
"Yes but we won," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said when asked if he was disappointed at the lack of a clean sheet.
"The clean sheet is important but our goal is to win. This was a very important victory to be closer to top four. Our target is this."
Arsenal started the match without Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the matchday squad, both missing through illness according to the club.
However, the visitors soon went in front through Iwobi, who collected Kolasinac's cross and shot at goal, with a deflection off Terence Kongolo taking the ball past home goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
Arsenal did not exert control after the opener as Huddersfield flew into challenges to unsettle the visitors, but one minute before the interval, Lacazette tapped in at the far post after being picked out by Ainsley Maitland-Niles to double the visitors' lead.
Arsenal led an away Premier League game by two goals or more for the first time since August, 2016, but their advantage was almost halved early in the second half, only for Diakhaby to fire too close to Leno before failing to find the target when unmarked at the back post.
With Arsenal seemingly on course for that first shutout, Daikhaby broke behind a static backline and nudged the ball towards goal for Kolasinac to deflect it over the line.
"We gave everything today and the way we played today made me proud," Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert said.
"At least at the end we scored. I fight until the end for this club."

Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday, but remain the only side without an away clean sheet in the Premier League this season.

‘Leeds United were RIGHT not to kick the ball out’, says former Aston Villa star Dean Saunders

‘Leeds United were RIGHT not to kick the ball out’, says former Aston Villa star Dean Saunders

Dean Saunders has criticised the Aston Villa players for trying to stop play during their controversial draw with Championship rivals Leeds United on Sunday.

There was a mass brawl on the Elland Road pitch after Leeds opened the scoring with Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia lying on the turf injured.

Villa players reacted angrily after they called for their opponents to kick the ball out of play, only for Mateusz Klich to play on and score with an excellent finish.

There was fury on both benches, too, as Aston Villa boss Dean Smith and his coaching team argued with Marcelo Bielsa, while the referee struggled to control the commotion.

Bielsa ultimately instructed his players to let the visitors score straight from the restart, although some were not happy with the decision, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Leeds came under fire for their players’ apparently unsportsmanlike conduct.

But Saunders insists the United stars were well within in their right to play on, saying Villa players were actually at fault for the incident.

“Leeds shouldn’t have kicked the ball out of play – it wasn’t a head injury, it was a leg injury,” the Welshman, who spent three years at Villa, said on Final Word.

“It’s up to the referee, the rules are the ref makes that decision to avoid things like this happening.

“He played on, so the Villa players shouldn’t have stopped. It’s not their right to point to kick the ball out of play.

“The [Leeds] lads have played the ball down the line and he’s taken the goal lovely, and it’s all kicked off.

“But, for me, they shouldn’t have kicked the ball out of the play. They should have played on until the referee blew his whistle.

“The rules are clear – if it’s a head injury you kick the ball out straight away to stop the game. If it’s not a head injury, play on until the referee blows his whistle.

“Don’t be telling people to kick the ball out of play and don’t be stopping – that situation could have cost Villa.

“Maybe the manager has thought, there’s nothing on the game for us, I had a bit of stick for ‘spygate’ and there is a chance to show a bit of sportsmanship here.”
