A Venezuelan player was axed by his club after his Panenka penalty was saved in a shootout.
Independiente de Campo Grande player Brendix Parra was made to look foolish in the penalty shootout against La Equidad in the Copa Sudamerica.
He went for a chip to try and beat Diego Novoa but could only hit it against his chest.
Independiente were dumped out of the competition and Parra had his contract terminated as a result.
Club president Eriberto Gamarra told ABC Cardinal: “The board of directors decided to dismiss Brendix Parra for the way he kicked the penalty.
“If we had qualified to the next round each player would have earned a bit of money.â€
Parra appears to have taken the news well, though. “It’s a difficult situation, but life goes on,†he said.
