Football: Fandi Ahmad plays down SEA Games rule of two overaged players as he focuses on improving U-22 side

SINGAPORE - An age restriction rule tweak has given him more options, but national Under-22 football coach Fandi Ahmad stressed his priority is to develop the current crop under him as they attempt to win Singapore’s first SEA Games gold.
The football tournament became exclusively an U-23 event in 2001 and this was lowered to U-22 for the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
But this year’s host, the Philippines, has adjusted the criteria to allow the 11 countries to include two overaged players for the Nov 30-Dec 11 Games.
This directive was recently communicated to the Football Association of Singapore through the Singapore National Olympic Council.
While Fandi could draft senior Lions like national captain Hariss Harun (age 28), forward Faris Ramli (26) or veteran goalkeeper Hassan Sunny (35), he said that with more than seven months to go, he has yet to decide which, if any, areas need strengthening.
“Very importantly, we need players who can understand the way we want to play, how we defend and attack,” said Fandi, 56.
“Everything is still open, and we don’t really see an area that is weakest or strongest (in the U-22 team) at this point.”
His immediate focus, he added, was to raise the levels of his Young Lions team, who beat Hougang United last Sunday for their first win of this season’s Singapore Premier League.

Last month, Fandi’s U-22 charges also participated in the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers and produced some encouraging performances. They beat Mongolia and drew with North Korea and Hong Kong to finish second in their group, although it was not enough to secure qualification for next year’s finals in Thailand.
Over 29 editions of the biennial SEA Games, the Republic’s best showing in football are three silvers in 1983, 1985 and 1989 – all of which Fandi featured as chief goal-getter.
Regarding the new overage rule, Fandi also cautioned against over-emphasising its importance.
Not only could the organisers decide to scrap it at the last minute, he might also not get the players he wants, citing past scenarios involving the Asian Games.
Its football tournament switched to an U-23 category in 2002 – with teams allowed three overaged players – but, like the SEA Games, both competitions are not sanctioned by world governing  body Fifa.
This means it is not compulsory for professional clubs to release their players for the Games.
At the 2014 Incheon Asiad, then Singapore coach Aide Iskandar took senior players Hassan, Baihakki Khaizan and Afiq Yunos to South Korea.
Afiq was a third-choice pick after key midfielders Hariss and Shahdan Sulaiman were not released by their clubs.
The presence of seasoned pros among young players can be a boost, noted national midfielder M. Anumanthan, who was an U-23 player in Incheon.
The 24-year-old said: “They (Hassan and Baihakki) brought maturity and stability to the team.
"They used their knowledge and experience to teach us how to deal with moments of pressure and uncertainty.”

Bolton issued prohibition notice and facing prospect of playing behind closed doors

Bolton could be forced to play their next two Championship home matches behind closed doors after being issued a prohibition notice by the club’s safety advisory group.

The safety group, which is comprised of representatives the local council, police and emergency services, informed the EFL on Tuesday that it has placed the notice on Wanderers under the Safety of Sports Grounds Act 1975.

No fans will be allowed to enter the University of Bolton Stadium for either of Wanderers’ next two home matches

No fans will be allowed to enter the University of Bolton Stadium for either of Wanderers’ next two home matches

It was decided by the group that Bolton could not guarantee fans at the University of Bolton Stadium would be safe.

The shock news comes a day before the club are due in the High Court, facing a winding-up petition from HMRC for £1.2million in unpaid tax and other debts.

Bolton’s players have also gone on strike over club staff not being paid their wages for March.

The club told the group it could not address its concerns until after the court hearing, which gave the safety experts little choice but to rule that all supporters will be prevented from entering the ground for the home games against Ipswich on Saturday, April 6, and Middlesbrough on Tuesday, April 9.

In a statement, an EFL spokesman said: “Whilst disappointed, the EFL understands the rationale for the position taken by the safety advisory group at this time.

“However, we still hope the fixtures will take place as planned. We will work with the club and offer them any practical assistance that is available to us in an attempt to find a successful and timely resolution to the issue.”

Bolton did manage to beat QPR on Saturday – which led to the Hoops sacking manager Steve McClaren – but the games against Ipswich and Boro are must-win games if they are to have any chance of catching 21st-placed Millwall, who also have a game in hand and a much better goal difference.

The stadium blow also comes only two hours after the latest update from chairman Ken Anderson on Bolton’s website, in which he makes no mention of the safety certificate problem but does urge the players to get back to work, while denying reports that the club’s sale is in trouble and that he is holding out for a large payment.

Strachan has said he would give Adam Johnson another chance

Former Celtic and Scotland boss Strachan, 62, says he would give Johnson a second chance to resurrect his career – if he showed remorse.

“I would if he’s shown genuine remorse,” Strachan said on Sky Sports show The Debate.

“Then I’d say, ‘Right, let’s get on with it’.

“I would because I go back to what I believe in, that everybody deserves a second chance – and he’s done his bit.

“People will think he’s done his three years but this is for life. People will say, ‘That’s that guy!’

“What if we don’t allow him back in the game and his family are affected? His kids? We’ve got to think about that.”

Johnson, who remains on licence, last played in the Premier League for Sunderland in 2016 and faces an uphill battle in his attempts to return to football.

In a leaked video from his time in prison, Johnson revealed he has more hope of reviving his playing career abroad.

The Chinese Super League is rumoured to be an option, but they subject players to thorough criminal record and background checks, as do America, Australia and some Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia – meaning Johnson’s options are severely limited.

Chelsea news: Club to fight anti-Semitism with visit to Auschwitz in effort to raise awareness of Holocaust

In a bid to fight anti-Semitism, Chelsea will raise awareness of the Holocaust by visiting Nazi concentration camps next month.

For the second year in a row, delegates of the Premier League side will join the annual March of the Living, but this time they will also link up with Major League Soccer side, New England Revolution.

Chelsea will play a friendly against the MLS team at the Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on 15 May in a match designed to raise funds for charities fighting anti-Semitism and raising awareness of the Holocaust.

Chelsea will have representatives at the March of the Living walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau in Poland on 2 May

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant, club director Eugene Tenenbaum, chief executive Guy Laurence and club ambassador Steve Redgrave will join the walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau in Poland on 2 May.

“Chelsea is honoured to participate in the March of the Living for the second year in a row,” said Tenenbaum.

“We started this initiative to raise awareness of and tackle anti-Semitism in all its forms more than a year ago and sharing this experience of paying our respects to the millions of Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust with members of the New England Revolution goes a long way in spreading the message of unity and tolerance.”

The March of the Living will bring together an expected 10,000 people to march from Auschwitz to Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex built during the Second World War.

Chelsea and New England will donate $1million each in support of the World Jewish Congress, the Tree of Life synagogue, the Anti-Defamation League and the Holocaust Educational Trust amid the funds raised around their friendly meeting in Massachusetts.

In 2018, Chelsea began their Say No to Anti-Semitism campaign and recently held a fund-raising dinner at Stamford Bridge for the International War Museums’ new Second World War and Holocaust galleries.

As recently as December, Chelsea condemned a minority of their own supporters who sang an anti-Semitic chant during the club’s 2-2 draw with Hungarian side Vidi.

It came with the Blues under scrutiny for the abuse Raheem Sterling received at Stamford Bridge, however, punishment from UEFA was avoided.

Lloris told the pre-match press conference: “We are ready to suffer because we know we are going to suffer. But we can cause problems too.

“We know the task is very difficult in the Premier League. It is a massive opportunity for the club to move one big step forward.”

Pochettino added on the chances of Alli facing City: “We need to assess him, we are going to have the last training session today and we are going to decide whether it is possible for him to start or be on the bench.”

Pochettino added: “It is going to be tough tomorrow, Man City is one of the best in the world and is a clear favourite to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

“For us to beat them in the first leg was an amazing result. But we know the tie is still open.

“Whatever happens tomorrow happens, we are going to be proud of our run in the Champions League. But that doesn’t mean we are not going to fight.”

Football: Pogba doubles again as Solskjaer extends perfect start

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) -The re-born Paul Pogba scored twice, for the second time since Jose Mourinho's departure from the club, as Manchester United beat Bournemouth 4-1 to make it three wins in a row for caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
After emphatic wins over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, the manner of the victory was further evidence of the return of attacking football under Solskjaer and of the liberated way in which the players are performing.
None seem to be relishing their football again more than World Cup winner Pogba, who has netted four of the 12 goals that rejuvenated United have scored in the three matches since their former Norwegian striker took the reins.
It took Pogba just five minutes to strike for sixth-placed United, sliding the ball in at the back post after a wonderful piece of dribbling and a precise low cross from Marcus Rashford.
The Frenchman, who scored twice against Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day, then burst into the box to head home an Ander Herrera cross from deep to make it 2-0.
"It is different, we still won games with the old manager but it is just a different style of playing," said Pogba.
"We are more offensive and we are creating more chances and that is how we want to play. I always want to do more, but I want to play for the team and play simple." Not only was Pogba appearing in more advanced positions but he looked back to his confident self on the ball, strutting while in possession and constantly looking to create.
There was real class about United's third, in the 45th minute, as Anthony Martial delivered a low cross with the outside of his boot and Rashford guided it home off the outside of his outstretched foot.

Bournemouth pulled a goal back in stoppage-time at the end of the first half though when David Brooks skipped around the United defence and placed a cross on the head of Nathan Ake who nodded past David De Gea.
Romelu Lukaku made it 4-1, two minutes after coming on as a 70th minute substitute, latching on to a Pogba through ball and hooking the ball past the advancing Asmir Begovic.
Pogba was inches away from a hat-trick with a low drive from 20 yards out that struck the post.
The relaxed and positive mood was slightly undone by a wild lunge in the 79th minute from United defender Eric Bailly on Ryan Fraser, with the Ivorian rightly being shown a straight red card.
"In the first half we attacked the game with a high tempo and high energy but the response to their goal was great. We managed the game much better than against Huddersfield," said Solskjaer.
"We are still looking for a clean sheet - you can't switch off for one second in this league.
"It's a very very good performance, the crowd was enjoying it but now Newcastle, the next one, is a different kind of test."

Rafael Benitez MUST stay at Newcastle United amid supporter unrest, Matt Ritchie tells talkSPORT

Rafael Benitez MUST stay at Newcastle United amid supporter unrest, Matt Ritchie tells talkSPORT

Newcastle star Matt Ritchie has stressed the importance of Rafael Benitez staying at the club beyond this season.

Benitez has transformed the fortunes of the Magpies this season after a dreadful start, but uncertainty surrounds his future on Tyneside.

Reports suggest the Spaniard is stalling on a new contract and could walk away from St James’ Park at the end of the season.

Ritchie, who has starred in a newly-found wing-back role, believes the club will struggle to find someone who stays so calm under pressure, particularly with everything going on off the pitch.

Ritchie heaped praise on Benitez

Ritchie heaped praise on Benitez

“He’s very good,” the Scot told talkSPORT.

“It’s massive that he does stay now, especially at the moment with the unrest among the fans.

“There’s no better man for the club. He’s seen everything.

“He’s been everywhere in football. He’s seen the highs and lows and he doesn’t ride with them.

“He’s always in the same mood. That spreads throughout the whole team and the whole club.

“We started really poorly this season and not once did the manager panic.”

Newcastle’s season has once again been riddled with fans protesting against the ownership of Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley.

And Ritchie admits the unrest has affected the team’s performances.

“I understand the frustrations but, at the same time, it did start to affect the atmosphere around the stadium,” he added.

“That’s no criticism towards the fans because they’ve been fantastic and I understand the unrest. But support is what the team needs.”

Ritchie earned a vital point for Newcastle against his former club Bournemouth on Saturday after striking at the death.

The Scotland international helped the Cherries gain promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and turned heads by swapping the top-flight club for the Magpies, who were in the Championship when he completed his move in 2016.

He admits that while it was the toughest decision of his life, he couldn’t be happier with the way it’s all panned out,” he continued.

“It was pleasing to get the goal but it was a strange feeling after playing for Bournemouth and returning and scoring.

“It was the biggest decision of my life. At the time, I’d been at Bournemouth for four special years.

“From the minute I arrived there – the people, the manager, the players, we had such a special thing there. When I look back now, I look back with such fond memories.

“I thought it was a time when I needed a new challenge. Luckily enough we got promoted and it’s gone to plan.”
