Tottenham may be DESTINED to win the Champions League this season, says Spurs legend Graham Roberts

Tottenham legend Graham Roberts believes Spurs may be destined to win the Champions League title this season after their crazy, crazy quarter-final victory over Manchester City.

And he has also hailed ‘magnificent’ manager Mauricio Pochettino, for proving it doesn’t take multi-million pound signings to achieve success at the top level.

In one of the most dramatic European games we’ve seen in recent years, Premier League rivals Spurs and City went at each other in gung-ho fashion, with five goals scored in a breathless opening 21 minutes.

But Spurs’ 1-0 lead from the first-leg proved crucial – the tie eventually finished 4-4 with the London club progressing to their first ever Champions League semi-final on away goals.

A nerve-shredding finale was full of drama which two lengthy VAR delays – one which awarded Fernando Llorente what eventually proved to be a winning goal, and another which denied Raheem Sterling what would have been a winner for City in stoppage-time.

It was a tragic way to crash out for the hosts, but Spurs didn’t mind one jot as Mauricio Pochettino led the mad celebrations in the away corner of the Etihad Stadium.

Roberts – a UEFA Cup and two-time FA Cup winner with Tottenham – boldly predicted such a result on talkSPORT hours before the thrilling game in Manchester.

Speaking to Jim White, the Spurs legend said he ‘had a feeling’ his former side would triumph.

And, ahead of what promises to be an exciting semi-final against Ajax, he believes Tottenham will go all the way.

“I was always confident we would out-do Manchester City over two legs,” Roberts said, again speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White, on Thursday.

“I think we’ll get to the final, 100 per cent. I have a real feeling.

“You look back, we could have gone out in the group stage, but what is meant to be is meant to be.

“I just believe since that day when we beat Inter Milan at home, we’ve been up there. We’re ready to go and we’re getting stronger as each round comes.”

Wednesday’s result was remarkable for another reason other than just the crazy action on the pitch.

City are the Premier League’s biggest-spending club and have one of the most decorated managers in football at the helm.

And yet, they were dumped out of the Champions League by a club that has not made a single signing this season, and with their top striker injured on the sidelines.

And Roberts praised ‘magnificent’ Pochettino, after beating the odds once again to take the club a step further to a possible trophy.

“The manager has been unbelievable, he’s been magnificent,” added the former defender.

“We’ve had so many injuries this season, he had no pre-season because we had nine players in the World Cup semi-final and final, and he’s not bought a single player!

“Everybody was saying, ‘you can’t do it if you haven’t bought any players’, but this manager doesn’t have to. He makes young players and the players he already has much, much better.”
