SC Paderborn complete remarkable Bundesliga return after rollercoaster five-year journey

There has rarely been a dull moment at SC Paderborn over the last five years.

The German club sealed automatic promotion to the Bundesliga on Sunday despite losing 3-1 to Dynamo Dresden.

Union Berlin’s 2-2 draw with VFL Bochum meant Paderborn went up on goal difference to complete a remarkable journey back to the top of German football.

You need to go back to 2014 to understand just how far Paderborn fell.

The club achieved the biggest breakthrough in its long history, achieving promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time.

But their celebrations were short-lived after the club finished rock bottom in the debut season and immediately returned to the second tier.

And things just continued to get worse as Paderborn found themselves trapped in a downward spiral.

After only six wins and 28 points in the 2015/16 season, they suffered yet another relegation and fell to the 3. Liga.

The 2016/17 season brought more misery and the club finished in the relegation zone, but instead of dropping down to the Regonalliga, Paderborn experienced a dramatic twist of fate.

They avoided relegation because 1860 Munchen failed to secure a license to play in the third tier.

It proved a turning point for the club, who have gone on to achieve back-to-back promotions to write one of German football’s true fairytales.

That said, I’m sure they’d settle for a nice, boring mid-table finish next season.
